Площадь Республики (на тот момент Новая Площадь) была создана по решению первого секретаря ЦК Компартии Казахстана Д. А. Кунаева, так как старая площадь имени Ленина (ныне площадь Астаны) уже не могла вместить жителей города с выросшей численностью населения во время массовых мероприятий.

23 ноября 2007 года Корпорация «БАЗИС-А» презентовала новый амбициозный проект – подземный многофункциональный общественный центр «Алмалы» в рамках проекта реконструкции Площади Республики в г. Алматы, «южной столицы» (старой столицы) Казахстана, с населением порядка 1,5 млн человек (см. ссылку).

Zheltoksan (Kazakh lit. Начальный проект подземного ТЦ «Алмалы» в Алматы был отменен. Измененный проект был значительно сокращен под размеры уже выкопанной части котлована. Общая площадь торгового центра составила 25 тыс. кв. м вместо 120 тыс. Проект предусматривал 3 этажа – 2 торговых уровня и 1 парковочный. Его строительство было продолжено в феврале 2009 и завершено в 2012.

Памятник Независимости «Алтын Адам» представляет собой 28-метровую стелу, на которой стоит 6-метровая скульптура Сакского воина - правителя верхом на крылатом барсе. Белый барс изображен на гербе и флаге Алматы. И белый барс с крыльями – официальный символ республики Татарстан, Россия. Стелу обрамляют наличники художественного литья, на которых изображены исторические события Казахстана. Она установлена на полукруглом постаменте. У подножья стелы по четырем углам квадрата стоят 4 фигуры: «Мудрец небес», «Мать-земля» и двое детей на жеребятах.
The Independence Monument "Altyn Adam" is a 28-meter stele, on which stands a 6-meter sculpture of a Saka warrior ruler riding a winged barys, bars (leopard). The white barys is depicted on the coat of arms and the flag of Almaty. And the white winged bars is the official symbol of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. The stele is framed by artistic molding platbands depicting historical events of Kazakhstan. It is mounted on a semicircular pedestal. At the foot of the stele, at the four corners of the square, there are 4 figures: "The Sage of Heaven", "Mother Earth" and two children on foals.

Площадь и подземный ТЦ «Алмалы» стали местом съемок одного из эпизодов фильма «Елки-3» компании «Bazelevs» Тимура Бекмамбетова. К участию в съемках были приглашены все желающие, которые привезли зимнюю одежду и снаряжение, а также продемонстрировали креативный подход, ярко проявив себя.

Летом 2017 подземный ТЦ «Алмалы» был вновь закрыт на реконструкцию, которую планировалось завершить к концу года. Но к концу года был подготовлен новый проект. В феврале 2018 Градсовет Алматы утвердил новую концепцию ТРЦ «Алмалы» как комплекса семейного и детского досуга. После чего началась новая перестройка Площади Республики и комплекса «Алмалы». Окончание строительных работ было запланировано на 2021.
In the summer of 2017, the Almaly underground shopping center was closed again for reconstruction, which was scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
